  • Flying: Minimum 200 hours of flying experience
What are the written exams that I need to pass to become eligible for a CPL?

The examinations one should have passed are:

  • Online exams conducted by DGCA in five subjects — Air Navigation, Air Regulations, Meteorology, Technical General and Technical Specific
  • Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical), also called RTR (A), [Part-1 Theory and Part-2 Communication]
  • English Language Proficiency (ELP) Test
Does the minimum age of 18 mean I can only start flying after 18, like a Driving License?

No. As per DGCA rules, one can start flying after 16 years of age by getting a Student Pilot License (SPL) from a DGCA authorised flying school — similar to a Learner's License in driving. This is a great option for youngsters who have made up their mind, as it gives more time to complete the 200 flying hours. The 18-year criteria is only for submitting the final application, which means the entire 200 hours can actually be finished before the age of 18.

How much does it cost to get a CPL in India?

The major component of the cost is the flying of 200 hours and the cost of type rating. Flying costs vary widely between different flying schools, while the cost of type rating is generally fixed. Therefore, the total expenditure for obtaining a CPL in India will vary anywhere between ₹65 – 80 Lakh depending upon the choice of flying school.

What is the average salary of a commercial pilot in India?

On getting a job offer from an airline, a pilot starts flying with the designation of a First Officer (after mandatory training and clearance period), with an average salary ranging from ₹30 – 40 lakhs per annum based on flying hours. After 4–5 years, and gaining the requisite hours and qualifications to become a Captain, the salary jumps to ₹70 – 80 lakhs per annum. With further growth as an instructor/examiner or captain of wide body aircraft, the annual salary will surely cross ₹1 Cr.

What is the maximum age to become a pilot?

The maximum age to obtain a CPL is 65 years as per DGCA rules. In fact, many people have switched careers to become commercial pilots. However, one must weigh the decision on a reasonable age limit, beyond which airlines are unlikely to recruit a fresh pilot. However, the option of obtaining a Private Pilot License (PPL) is always available for aviation enthusiasts who could not commence flying earlier in life.

What if an Arts or Commerce student wants to become a pilot?

A person from any stream can become a pilot. The only additional thing he/she has to do is enrol with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and appear for the Senior Secondary (Class 12) Physics and Maths papers through their On Demand Examination System.

How many attempts are permitted for passing the exams?

There is no cap on the maximum number of attempts a candidate can take for DGCA exams. DGCA conducts its exams every month, regular session every three months (Mar, Jun, Sep & Dec), and 'On Demand' exams every other month — meaning exams are scheduled across all 12 months in a year. This implies a candidate can actually plan to appear for exams in sequence every month.

Can I start my flying along with my ground subjects preparation?

While there is no such restriction, it is advisable to start with ground subjects first, attain some proficiency and pass at least 3–4 exams before starting flying. This is because an exam once passed, is valid for 05 years. Passing theory exams before flying also reduces the workload during flying (which is intensive training in itself) and gives the candidate basic theory knowledge before the commencement of flying.

How much time does it take to obtain a CPL?

An average student can obtain a CPL within 24–26 months of starting their first training in ground subjects, accounting for the time required by DGCA to process the documents and the final application.

I wear spectacles. Can I become a pilot?

Yes, a person with spectacles can become a pilot, provided his/her vision is correctable to 6/6 with spectacles.

What is the schedule of the RTR (A) Exam?

The Part-1 of RTR (A) (MCQ-style theory paper) is conducted every month as per the normal exam schedule. Once the candidate passes Part-1, he/she can avail three chances to pass the Part-2 of RTR (A) (communication-based viva exam). The Part-2 exam can be scheduled by oneself through their eGCA ID, based on availability of slots.
